Yes. AI assistants and answer engines regularly cite video — primarily YouTube — when answering questions. But they don’t watch it. They read the transcript, title, description, and chapter markers, then cite the URL. That means video becomes citable through its text layer: an accurate transcript, a title that matches how people phrase the question, chapters that segment answers, and a description that states the answer plainly. Video with no text layer is effectively invisible to AI search, however good the video is.

Introduction

Most writing about AI search optimization treats it as a text problem: write clearer articles, add FAQ sections, structure your headings so a language model can lift an answer. That advice is fine as far as it goes. It also quietly assumes video doesn’t matter.

We had reason to check. Gisteo has produced explainer videos since 2011 — more than 3,000 projects for clients including Intel, Harvard, Oracle, and Cloudflare — so when we ran a visibility audit on our own category, we paid particular attention to where video showed up. The answer surprised us enough to write this.

Across the source URLs that AI engines were pulling from to answer questions in our category, YouTube ranked second — behind only a single competitor’s content hub, and ahead of Clutch, ahead of every industry publication, ahead of every agency blog we compete with. Two individual YouTube videos appeared among the most-cited sources in the entire dataset.

So video isn’t peripheral to AI search. In our category it’s one of the primary channels. What follows is how it actually works, what makes a video citable, and the specific things we changed once we understood the mechanism.

How AI Search Actually Handles Video

The critical thing to understand: AI assistants don’t watch your video. They read around it.

When an answer engine surfaces a video, it’s working from the text layer attached to that video — the transcript or captions, the title, the description, chapter markers, and any structured data on the page hosting it. The visual content itself, the thing you spent your budget on, is largely opaque to the system doing the citing.

That has a slightly deflating implication and a genuinely useful one. The deflating version: a beautifully produced video with an auto-generated, error-riddled transcript will lose citations to a mediocre screen recording with a clean one. The useful version: making video citable is cheap, mechanical work you can do to videos you’ve already produced.

It also explains why YouTube dominates. YouTube generates transcripts by default, exposes them in an accessible format, structures chapters, and carries enormous domain authority. A video on your own site with no transcript and no schema has none of those advantages, no matter how much better the video is.

What Makes a Video Citable

Six things, in rough order of impact:

  1. An accurate transcript. Auto-captions are a starting point, not a finish. Correct product names, technical terms, and numbers — these are exactly the specifics an answer engine wants to quote, and exactly what auto-transcription mangles. Publish the corrected transcript on the page too, not just as a caption track.
  2. A title phrased as the question. “How Long Does Explainer Video Production Take?” gets cited on that query. “Our Process” does not. This is the single easiest fix and the most commonly missed.
  3. Chapters that segment discrete answers. Chapter markers let an engine cite a specific moment rather than an entire video. A ten-minute video with eight chapters is eight potential citations; the same video without them is one.
  4. A description that answers plainly. The first two lines should state the answer in flat prose — no teaser, no “watch to find out.” Withholding the answer is a conversion tactic that costs you citations.
  5. VideoObject schema on the hosting page. Structured data tells crawlers what the video is, how long it runs, what it covers, and where the transcript is. Without it, a self-hosted video is a black box.
  6. A companion text page. The strongest pattern we’ve seen is a video paired with an article covering the same ground — the article earns the citation, the video earns the engagement and the dwell time. Neither competes with the other.

Where Video Beats Text for Citation

Video isn’t uniformly better or worse than an article. It wins in specific circumstances:

The practical read: if your own site has thin authority in a topic, a YouTube video can get you cited faster than an article on your domain will. YouTube lends you its credibility. That’s a real strategic advantage for smaller companies competing against established publishers — and it’s a channel most businesses aren’t using deliberately.

What Our Own Audit Found

A few findings worth sharing, because they’re the kind of thing you only learn by measuring rather than assuming.

AI assistants are already a live traffic channel

Over a recent 28-day window, AI assistants sent us roughly 29% of the visits Google organic search sent — ChatGPT accounting for the bulk of it, with Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and several others contributing. Not a rounding error, and not a future-state projection. A live channel, this quarter.

The number is probably conservative. Nearly three quarters of our traffic registered as “direct,” and a meaningful share of that is likely AI referrals arriving without a passable referrer. If you’re evaluating this for your own business, assume your measured AI traffic understates the real figure.

We were cited in none of the sources

Of the several hundred source URLs that answer engines were drawing on to respond to questions in our category, our own domain appeared in zero. Meanwhile, roughly half of all cited sources were roundup articles and listicles published by other companies — including several that mentioned us in passing, which is a different and much weaker thing than being the cited source.

We’re publishing that because it’s the most useful part of the audit. Being invisible in AI search is not a signal that your content is bad; ours ranks perfectly well in conventional search. It’s a signal that citation and ranking are different games with different rules, and that measuring the second one tells you nothing about the first.

A competitor was describing us — inaccurately

The audit also turned up a competitor’s roundup that included us, with a two-line description that got several material facts wrong. Because roundups are so heavily cited, that description was effectively our public summary in AI answers — written by someone else, without our input, and wrong.

If you take one operational lesson from this article, make it that one: find out what the internet says about you, because AI answers are assembled from it. We’d have never known without looking.

What We Changed

  1. Started a deliberate YouTube presence. Given YouTube’s position in the citation data, publishing there is no longer an audience-building exercise — it’s a citation channel.
  2. Rebuilt transcripts and descriptions on existing video assets, rather than producing new ones. Cheapest possible improvement to work that already exists.
  3. Restructured titles as questions, matching how people actually phrase things in a chat interface rather than a search box.
  4. Corrected the competitor listing, politely and with a drop-in replacement blurb they could paste.
  5. Consolidated overlapping articles, because we found we’d been competing against ourselves — a cluster of similar pages splitting the same demand and none of them accumulating enough authority to be cited.
  6. Set a measurement cadence, so the next audit tells us whether any of it worked rather than requiring another round of guessing.

A Practical Checklist

  • Transcript: Correct it, publish it on the page, and keep it accessible.
  • Title: Phrase it as the question someone would type.
  • Chapters: Add them, and name them by the sub-question each answers.
  • Description: State the answer in the first two lines.
  • Schema: Add VideoObject to any self-hosted video page.
  • Companion page: Pair each significant video with an article on the same question.
  • Third-party mentions: Check what third-party pages say about you, and correct what’s wrong.
  • Measurement: Track AI-assistant referrals separately in analytics so you know the channel’s real size.

The encouraging part is how cheap the fix is. Almost everything in the checklist above applies to video you’ve already produced. You don’t need a new content strategy; you need the text layer around the work you’ve already paid for.
