Why social media animations are essential to any marketing strategy

The rise of video makes it a vital part of every marketing strategy — especially on social media.

According to experts, video is one of the best tools to take your business to the next level, as on Facebook alone, videos receive 8 billion views a day.

Gary Vaynerchuk summed it up nicely.

The single most important strategy in content marketing today is video. Whether it’s video on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat or Youtube, the content you need to be thinking about creating and marketing on social for your business is video. Period.

7 tips to creating effective social media animations

1: Go native!

Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and others are great platforms for sharing videos and engaging with your target audience. However, when doing so, it’s better to upload and share native videos on these sites vs. posting YouTube links or links to other sites or articles where your video may be.

Why? Because it has been found that native videos perform 10x better on Facebook when compared to YouTube links. That’s because native videos begin to play automatically as you scroll down through your feed, catching peoples’ eye while YouTube vides need to be manually played. Also, native videos play inside of the social media environment, while YouTube videos play on an external page

2: Keep them short

For better engagement, try creating short, bite-size videos. When done right, social media animations can help your brand attract attention and create online brand awareness. This is especially important on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where research shows that the best performing videos are 1 minute or under.

Why do shorter social animations work better?  One of the most obvious reasons is the fact that they are shorter and more “digestible.”  They don’t consume much of your time and are easy to “snack” on.

Successful social media content revolves around instant gratification, because social media users today want to:

  • Consume content without wasting much time
  • Keep track of what’s going on around them
  • Be informed on trending topics
  • Get entertained quickly before moving on

Short social media animations are perfect for people who are looking for useful information but are too busy to spend a lot of time on it. They want to consume it on the move, while they are on their mobile devices…and it’s important to note that 80% of the social media content is being consumed via mobile devices.

3: Grab their attention in the first few seconds

Let’s be honest.  Most people have short attention spans, especially in today’s hyper-connected world with distractions at every turn.  That’s why you need to do whatever you can to grab the your viewers’ attention within the first few seconds of your social media animation.  Unlike a longer explainer video that you might post on Youtube, you don’t have 30 or 40 seconds to get to the pay off of you video on social media.

4: Add subtitles and/or text

Subtitles and/or on screen text play an important role in social media animations.  That’s because nearly 85% of the videos that are being autoplayed on social media are viewed without sound. This is understandable given that most users check their socials in public, they obviously wouldn’t want to draw attention to what they are watching. So be sure the subtitles in your social media videos are readable if you’re using a voice over or build your story exclusively with images, onscreen text and music (no voice over).

5: Keep your message focused

Posting a video on social media isn’t dissimilar to a conversation: you can only discuss one thing at a time. Otherwise your audience will quickly lose interest. Your social media animations should be telling the story that leaves viewers wanting more. If you’re adding something to the video that doesn’t contribute directly to the call to action (see below), you may want to consider removing it.  Since your social media animations are short, it’s fairly to start a lot of conversations with different messages on an ongoing basis

6: Include a Call-to-Action

No matter where you’re posting your social media animation,  you should always have a goal for your video. This typically involves user action, whether you’re driving traffic to your site, purchasing a product or sharing your video. Your call to action is your virtual handshake with your viewers. Since these videos are short and sweet, you then need to direct them to take the desired action once they’ve finishing watching.  Something as simple as “to find out more visit here” may be all that is necessary.

7: Leverage your current assets

If making social media animations seems intimidating don’t worry.  You likely already have more content to work with than you think.  You can use your current assets that can be converted into interesting social media video content.  Tap into your FAQ page, for instance.  You can create several “bite-size” pieces from there alone.  If you’ve created infographics in the past, that’s another great source of content for your social media animations.  If you have ebooks or whitepapers, consider making a short trailer for them.  With a little thinking, you can come up for some great content ideas!

How Gisteo can help

While there are no shortage of do-it-yourself tools to create social media animations or social media video content, they can be cumbersome to learn and require a lot of trial and error in order to produce exactly what you’re looking for.

Most rely on templates that may restrict you when trying to develop the perfect message  and visuals for your audience. Plus, while they may offer a free trial to get started, you’ll need to pay a fee to remove their branding and use yours and the prices normally considerably depending on the monthly volume of videos you’d like to create.

Gisteo’s social media animations are custom-made to your unique needs and visual preferences.  We do all the heavy-lifting so you can focus on growing your business with effective social media efforts…instead of sweating through messy tools to produce mediocre-looking content!

Examples of social media animations

The samples below reflect our social media animation offering.  Each includes text, key images and music.  They are designed to appear in social feeds, where the volume is off by default, therefore there is no voice over. You’ll see that they utilize a square format vs. the more traditional landscape format. This is to optimize them for viewing on platforms like Facebook or Instagram which are often viewed on mobile phones.  We also recommend keeping them short and sweet as in our own “Fact Bombs.”  If you need to add more content, that’s possible too but we suggest keeping it to the 60-90 second range max as in the example we created for the University of Michigan’s AlumniAdvantage program.
